Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. An air conditioner or heat pump relies on its refrigerant to cool and dehumidify the air before it’s streamed back into your home. This liquid is found within the coils of your cooling system, but one of the most common refrigerants used for many, many years – the R-22 (Freon) is now being replaced in response to environmental concerns. In fact, this phase-out was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be in production. Introducing R-410A Recognized by the EPA, R-410A is a chlorine-free and ozone-friendly refrigerant. R-410A will keep your home cool without damaging the environment. Even better news, Lennox’s most efficient systems are designed to use this AC refrigerant, which can help your system perform efficiently. The same Lennox systems are known for reliability, quiet operation and improved dehumidification, so you can stay comfortable. Additional Considerations At American Premier Heating & Air Conditioning in Sylmar, our cooling offerings can work with R-410A. If you have a system that was made prior to 2010, you may want to consider replacing your cooling system now, before R-22 is hard to find. Some manufacturers sell alternate refrigerants such as R-407C, R-438A and R-422, however, they may not work with an R-22 AC or heat pump and could compromise your system’s performance.
