Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in Sylmar04/13/2016The weather is finally warming up and soon you could have to change over to your air conditioner. Along with scheduling your annual air conditioner service with the team at American Premier Heating & Air Conditioning, there are a number of other items you can do to keep cozy and save money this month. During the transformation season in Sylmar, those far too few spring temps, you likely use ceiling fans to keep cozy. Did you know that operating your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner could not only keep you more cozy during the warmer days, but also save you money? In order to do that you have to make sure you’re taking advantage of ceiling fans and your air conditioning correctly. Here’s a few things to remember: Raise Your Thermostat This is where the cost savings can possibly come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving on your expenses. Raising your thermostat by a couple degrees, in addition to using your ceiling fan, shouldn’t change your comfort level that much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lowering the period of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner. Adjust Air Direction Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to switch depending on the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to ensure the air is blowing down. You can stand beneath the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, adjust the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually cool your air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature shown on the thermostat. Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There Treat your ceiling fan like you would lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to feel the wind chill that a fan offers you’re wasting energy by operating your fan. Keep in mind, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
